I went out to eat with my Chinese friend once. He ordered some noodles, and I ordered some 盖饭 dish. As he was eating, he kept slurping his noodles. *slurp* *slurp*
The noise was so loud that I got a bit annoyed. I asked him, “Why are you slurping your food loudly?”

To me, it was odd, as in the West, we are taught to eat our food quietly. When I was little, if I ate my food loudly, my parents would get mad at me, because it is considered very impolite.
My friend explained to me, “Oh? Over here it means that we really think the meal is delicious!” It is the opposite of how it is in my country, since eating loudly just sounds like you are trying to eat fast. But, in the West we have a saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”, which is similar to the Chinese 《入乡随俗》. So I tried it.
When I went back to the US, I went to an Italian restaurant with some friends. I started slurping the spaghetti, in which my friends asked me, “What are you doing?” I then remembered where I was and responded: “Oops, sorry,” and then ate quietly. 入乡随俗。
