Dover Beach

The sea is calm to-night.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand;
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!

Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
the eternal note of sadness in.

Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the Aegean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery;
We find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.

The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now I only hear
Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.

Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.

和赤裸的碎石滩。

啊，爱人，让我们彼此
忠诚坚贞！因为这个世界，它
像梦幻之地在我们面前摊开，
如此多样，如此美丽，如此崭新，
其实没有欢乐，没有爱情，也没有光明，
没有确定，没有平和，痛苦也没有助援；
而我们在此也如同身处暗夜的平原，
响遍了抗争斗杀的阵阵杂乱警鸣，
有如无知的队伍趁夜交兵。

作者简介
马修·阿诺德（Matthew Arnold，1822-1888），英国近代诗人、评论家。在牛津大学任诗学教授长达十年，写过大量文学、教育、社会问题的随笔，猛烈抨击英国生活和文化方面的地方主义和庸俗风气，影响了艾略特（T.S.Eliot）等一代文人。

如果谈起贡献，阿诺德似乎要比同时代的伟大诗人丁尼生和勃朗宁稍逊一筹，但若只论单篇，阿诺德的这首Dover Beach在维多利亚时期的诗歌中算是最引人注目的名篇之一了：明与暗的交替，潮水的涨落，月的阴晴圆缺，人的悲欢离合，皆是自然之律，难以违逆。

对信仰几次暗喻与明喻，以自然之景的变幻来映射对人生的不确定性，想起另一时空中的希腊悲剧诗人索福克勒斯，找到其中神秘的共鸣。扯的好像语文阅读理解，然而我始终没有渗透这首诗。气势如此宏大，仿佛跨越了整个时空与情感。
